It was one of the largest hillforts in Scotland, and the remains of more than a hundred houses have been identified within its ramparts. The defences of Tap o'Noth were a mix of earth banks and stone and timber walls. At some stage part of the fort was burnt, causing sections of the stonework to melt - something archaeologists have found at many Scottish hillforts.
